Blockchain is at the top of China's five-year policy plan
Blockchain technology was mentioned for the first time in China's draft national five-year policy plan, the final version of which was approved by lawmakers and advisers at the end of an annual political meeting in Beijing on Thursday.

• The lengthy document, which makes the first mention of the technology underpinning bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, lays out the goals that China will strive to achieve over the next decade, according to the South China Morning Post.

• China's 14th Five-Year Plan Outlines the country's economic priorities and emphasizes that technology will play an increasingly important role in top-down planning.

• Blockchain is set to play a key role in China's digital economy under President Xi Jinping, even though the country has banned cryptocurrency trading, according to the South China Morning Post.

• The digital economy is expected to contribute to the country's GDP and "transform China into a global leader" through the use of artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and blockchain, the draft said.

• The final version of the plan has yet to be released.
